To Support Black Youth Mental Health, We Must Look to Community-Based Solutions
This theme describes concepts the youth learned to support their academic growth when they struggled in school. Specifically, we strove to ensure that we identified both negative and positive sentiments communicated by the youth in relation to their experiences of the program and school experiences. With respect to bracketing and research reflexivity, the research team regularly discussed our personal values and background knowledge concerning our experiences as mental health professionals, social justice advocates, and/or connection to the Black Church as four Black women to minimize personal biases that could interfere with our understanding of the data. We asked the youth to share or discuss an artifact in reference to the support they received to help them describe their experiences in more concrete, developmentally appropriate ways and solicit more information from the participants about their experiences.

For African American children and adolescents coping with the risk or reality of serious emotional disturbances, the world we live in can be a particularly painful and dangerous place. Lutheran Family and Children’s Services of Missouri (LFCS) is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit social services organization serving the state of Missouri. In 2022, the suicide rate among Black youth aged 10 to 19 surpassed that of their White peers for the first time. Moreover, suicide—a stark indicator of mental health crises—has become the third leading cause of death for Black Americans aged 15 to 24, with suicide rates increasing by 58% between 2011 and 2021. Despite making strides in raising awareness about mental health, systemic inequities, cultural stigmas, and a history of mistrust in healthcare systems continue to pose barriers to access and care.

She has been forced to challenge misconceptions about Black people and suicide not only among other academics, but also within her own community, including the clergy in Black churches. Then, using what she had learned, Molock designed the first iteration of her church-based intervention program in 2007 — a plan she believed would help prevent suicides among Black youth. Back in 1993, Molock was eventually able to overcome reviewers’ skepticism about studying suicides among Black people. The share of teenagers who said they have felt depressed nearly doubled from 2009 to 2019; 22 percent of US high school students said they had seriously considered suicide in 2021, up from 16 percent in 2011.
