People in LGBTQIA+ communities may experience discrimination in a healthcare setting. Coming out is when a person first tells someone about their sexual and/or gender identity. LGBTQIA+ is an umbrella term that encompasses both sexual and gender identities, recognising that not everyone identifies as heterosexual and/or cisgender.

Central District Health DepartmentCentral District Health Department provides HIV/STD testing on a sliding scale. Waikiki HealthWaikiki Health offers numerous programs specifically created for the LGBTQ community. They provide STI/HIV testing, PrEP clinic, counseling, and medical case management to patients living with HIV/AIDS. They match volunteers (visitors) with members of the South Florida Institute on Aging’s LGBTQ community to provide companionship and combat loneliness. They focus particularly on Black, Latinx, immigrant, LGBTQ+, disabled folx, and other communities that show statistically higher rates of mental health challenges and/or lack of access to affordable and accessible mental wellness options that practice cultural humility.

Clinic services include primary care, preventative care, PrEP, adult hormone therapy, counseling, and tobacco dependence treatment. Synergy ServicesSynergy Services provides shelter and educational resources to youth in crisis in Kansas City. They provide compassionate care to all patients and provide a directory of providers with specific clinical interests in LGBTQ health. They provide temporary and permanent housing programs as well as educational, financial, and health resources.

Social determinants of LGBTQ mental health

Supporting LGBTIQ+ Muslims and provides an online forum where people can share experiences and ask for help. The Proud Trust’s programme of bespoke support for LGBT+ young people LGBTQ students and rainbow stickers in Texas schools and the adults in their lives. An expert lived experience-led community public health organisation and registered charity dedicated to addressing health inequalities for LGBTQ+ Black and People of Colour in the UK.

The UK, which has in recent history been considered one of the most progressive countries for LGBT+ support and protections, has also seen a rise in anti-trans rhetoric and erosion of legal and social protections. Across Africa, several countries, including Uganda, Ghana, Malawi, Zambia and Kenya, have witnessed troubling developments that threaten to strip LGBT+ people of legal recognition and safety. Pride is not just a celebration — it is a commitment to resistance, solidarity and progress in the face of uncertainty and adversity, and to building stronger and healthier LGBT+ networks and community. These initiatives not only contribute to the well-being of individuals within the LGBTQ community but also work toward fostering a more inclusive society. These frameworks contribute to the formation of an environment that actively supports and embraces the LGBTQ community.

Access and Coverage for Mental Health Care for Women

AMAAD InstituteAMAAD provides support services, community support, and resources centered around specialized, strength-based management and services and leadership development with a focus on LGBTQ people of color. Additionally, The Source LGBT+ Center partners with Tulare County Suicide Prevention Taskforce and Heartworks, Inc to provide LGBTQ+ affirming care to people who lack access to mental health services and support groups. They provide full primary care including hormone therapy, mental health care, sexual health screening and care, and surgical referral.

This 501(c)(3) grassroots organization explicitly focuses on supporting individuals belonging to marginalized communities. This helpline focuses on providing culturally-responsive support to Native American and Alaska Native survivors, family members, and friends affected by domestic, dating and sexual violence. This hotline is available 24/7, via call and mobile app, and provides peer-support, crisis-support, and an avenue to report vigilante and police misconduct. The report further mentions a lack of visibility, acceptance and resources for LGBTQIA+ individuals in rural areas compared to urban communities. Nevertheless, some family members may react negatively to their relative coming out and familial rejection is a significant factor for compromised LGBTQIA+ mental health.
